Cleaning the studio??

The sewing room is a disaster area right now. I’m trying to get it organized, which means that I am pulling things out of boxes and trying to decide if I need to keep them or get rid of them. There are “keep” piles and “giveaway” piles and bags for the stuff that should have been thrown away years ago!!!

So the studio looks like a bomb has gone off and scattered fabric and books and craft supplies on every surface in the room!!

And I’m finding all kinds of projects that I’ve started and then never finished. I’ve been calling them WIPs (Works in Progress) but let’s face it, the progress has been non-existent for a long, long time.

I used to do counted cross stitch and I’ve found a few unfinished projects that I don’t know what to do about. First problem is that the patterns are not with the project. I know that I still have the pattern books, but where!?! Then, do I really WANT to do counted cross stitch again? I’m going to have to face the fact that my eyes don’t work as well as they used to and maybe I just don’t want to make myself crazy trying to see those tiny stitches anymore. Also, I’m not sure about this, but the colors may have faded and then, if I do try to finish it, the new stitches will not blend in with the old.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are all the flimsies that I made in hopes that I would have a long arm someday. Well, that day finally happened, but I didn’t magically get all those flimsies quilted!!! There is a pile (okay, there are eight) that I need to get batting and backing for, then load onto the Fun Quilter and actually get the quilting done.

There are the holiday tree skirts that still need to be assembled and quilted. There are boxes, and boxes and boxes of scraps that are all jumbled together. Now that I’ve started using Bonnie Hunter’s scrap user system, those boxes are crying out to be trimmed and sorted, so that they can be used in quilts. There are quilt blocks that I started quilting (by HAND!!!) that I intended to assemble with the Quilt-As-You-Go method, but never got the quilting finished. Do I go back to quilting (by HAND!!!!) and assemble them QAYG, or do I take out all those HAND stitches and put the blocks into a top and quilt on the Fun Quilter!?!

I could go on, but I think you’ve got the idea – this is going to be a long, drawn out process. And, since I really don’t like to do much cleaning, I already know that I’m not going to get it all done at once. I’m going to wind up pushing things into boxes and putting them in the back of the closet to deal with later just so that I can clear a space to be able to start another new project!!! Welcome to my crazy world!!

Life is short

  1. With the QAYG blocks. . . . would you be able to quilt the unquilted blocks by machine & then just assemble all the blocks? I have seen quilts that have both hand & machine quilting. . . and it would save tons of time taking out the hand stitching.

Your “Santa” cross stitch just looks like it needs to be made into a pillow — or framed — and the stocking could just get a backing & lining & be finished.

I am going through the same “crises”….. our basement has become overrun with stuff so I have been trying to get DH to go through his stuff while I go through mine.

We were forced to downsize by two sewer floods. . . . .but somehow I think the fabric just keeps multiplying during the night! LOL

    Good luck
