Stash Report Tuesday – February 5, 2013

Hm-m-m. Something is just not right around here. After all, the purpose of these stash reports is to encourage me to REDUCE my stash. I really thought that if I was reporting to the whole world, it would help keep the fabric purchases in check. And also encourage me to get projects finished. but somehow, things aren’t going as planned.

First let me say that I did have a wonderful sewing day on Saturday. It was great spending the day with Bev, Barb and Nadine. But I didn’t get a lot of personal sewing done. I DID, with a HUGE amount of help from Nadine, turn the piles of fabric for the donation quilts into this:

Piles of cut strips and backings for the donation quilts!! We have kits for 25 donation quilts to be sewn by ladies in our quilt group. Now all I have to do is match up backings and strips, cut some sashings and bindings, bag them up into individual kits and I’ll be ready for the workshop!!

That’s all!! 😉

Unfortunately, none of this fabric is from my stash, it was all purchased by our group. So – good news – I did not add 140 yards of fabric to my stash. But – bad news – after all that work, I did not remove any yardage from my stash!

Second, I am having a difficult time figuring out what I want to do with my Irish Chain quilt. If you recall, I have a goal to start work on an Irish Chain quilt for February. At first I thought I would like to make a double Irish Chain using dark fabrics for the main chain, with cream fabrics for the secondary chain and the rosy pink fabrics for the background.

Then I had a blinding flash of inspiration that convinced me that I should make a triple Irish Chain with black as the main chain, pink for the secondary chain, cream for the tertiary chain and green for the background. So I pulled some fabric to see if there was anything I had that would work for that and decide if that is what I want to do. Here’s what I have pulled out:

I don’t know – I’m kind of underwhelmed by these choices. I think I will head back to the drawing board on this one. I definitely want to make something using the pink. I just am not sure exactly what!

Okay, now for the actual stash report.

I am sending one yard of fabric (four fat quarters) to the winner of the giveaway I had in January. Woo-hoo!! I used one yard!!!! And I was doing really, really good and hadn’t stepped foot in a fabric store or even looked on-line!! So you would think that I would not have added any fabric to my stash.

But you would be wrong!

Fabric hunts me down and forces itself upon me!!!

These two pieces were purchased for the donation quilts, but we decided not to use them. I heard someone say, “I’ll buy those two pieces, I can always use them.”

That someone was me. What the heck!?!

AND THEN – at the end of the day of cutting there was this:

Lots of strips of fabric. We couldn’t let them go to waste, now could we? Somehow they migrated to my sewing studio and are waiting for me to do something with them.

So here it is – “Heavy Sigh”

Stash report:
Fabric used this week: 1 yards
Fabric added this week: 5.25 yards
Fabric used YTD: 14 yards
Fabric added YTD: 54.25 yards
YTD total: 40.25 yards added

Maybe someday I’ll be able to get these numbers to reflect a reduction in the total amount of stash, but it’s not going to be today!

  1. Have you ever made a quilted tote bag for hanging on a walker? As you know, I will be using my walker on or after April 30, and I thought that maybe I could help you reduce some of your stash for a useful project. Of course, the bag would need to be sturdy and washable, and I would need some ideas on how to make one with pockets, etc. With the help of the “queen of quilts”, I could have a beautiful one-of-a-kind tote bag.
